Tinkering at the edges of our housing crises is getting us no where.
The Metro Vancouver Housing 10-Year Plan sets a “target of 1350 new or redeveloped units over the next decade”. This is woefully inadequate!
Here is a practical and easy solution to our housing crises – Laneway Homes.
All that is needed are changes to our existing single-family zoning bylaws.
Think, if only we allow 5% of the existing Metro Vancouver single family lots – 363987 – to add laneway homes that creates 18199 new housing units.
Imagine, 18199 new homes to be rented or sold.
As shown the laneway homes are attractive, efficient, and affordable. Plus, these homes can come on stream fast.
The movement of laneway homes has started. This can become the new normal in the same way apartment buildings are today normal.
